PLACE PIXELS
  • city or lat, lng
  • or a wplace link
  • or the four numbers

Any place on Earth, as wplace numbers.

Type a city, paste a latitude and longitude, a wplace share link, or the four numbers off the picker. Whatever you had, you get the tile and pixel, a link that opens it on wplace, and the same spot on the map here.

  • 2,048 tiles a side, 1,000 pixels each
  • Works offline once loaded
  • Use my location, on a phone

The tile and pixel numbers appear here, with a link that opens the spot on either map.

Web Mercatorpixels get smaller on the ground toward the poles

The grid is the standard web map tiling: longitude maps straight to X, latitude goes through the Mercator stretch to Y, and the world is cut into tiles at zoom 11. The picker's Tl is which tile; Px is the pixel inside it, counted from the tile's top-left corner.

Near the poles

Mercator has no top or bottom row, so wplace stops at about 85 degrees north and south. A latitude past that is clamped to the edge tile.

Common questions

What are Tl X, Tl Y, Px X and Px Y on wplace?

The tile the pixel is in and its position inside that tile. wplace cuts the world into 2,048 by 2,048 tiles of 1,000 pixels a side, so Tl runs 0 to 2,047 and Px runs 0 to 999.

How do I find coordinates for a Blue Marble template?

Search the place, read the four numbers, and paste them as the template's anchor. The anchor is the top-left pixel of the image, so pick the spot where its corner goes.

How do I share a location on wplace?

The share button on wplace copies a link with lat, lng and zoom. Paste one of those here and the tool reads it; the open-on-wplace link builds the same kind of link for any place.

Why does the tile math use zoom 11?

2,048 tiles across is 2 to the power 11, which is the standard web map grid at that zoom. Each wplace tile is that grid's tile drawn at 1,000 pixels.

Does Place Pixels have the same coordinates?

No. Place Pixels squares are 10 meters on the ground and addressed by latitude and longitude, so a link to any square opens the map right there without tile numbers.
