- the canvas is Earth
- 10 m per pixel
- free to paint
r/place, but on a world map.
Same shared-canvas mechanic laid over the real Earth. One pixel is ten meters across, the square you paint is a place you can walk to, and a link to your work opens the map at that spot.
- Paint anywhere on Earth
- No account for your first 50 pixels
- Nothing resets and nothing whites out
What changes when the canvas is a map
What do I draw?
Already answered. You paint the building you live in, the school you went to, the shape of the park.
The hardest question on the board. Nobody has a claim on any part of a blank rectangle, so alliances formed to divide it.
Coordinates become addresses. A link to a piece of work opens the map at that spot, so showing someone what you painted is a URL rather than a screenshot with an arrow on it.
Nothing ends. There is no final image and no whiteout. Work stays where you put it until somebody paints over it.
The geometry
- One pixel
- 10 msquare, aligned to the Web Mercator grid
- Painting starts at
- zoom 15
- Pixels are drawn
- 10 to 20zoom
- The canvas
- Earthevery land and sea square of it
Below zoom 10 a ten-meter square is smaller than a screen pixel, so the paint layer is not drawn at all and you are looking at a plain map.
Will anyone else be there?
r/place worked because a million people were crowded onto one square. Spread the same people across the planet and almost every street is empty.
- Cities are the unit that leaderboards, quests and reputation run on, so being fourth in Denver is a reachable thing to be.
- Community murals put large paint-by-number outlines in cities, so a player alone at 3am is advancing something other strangers advance while they sleep.
- Events run on a clock: a weekly themed canvas, a spotlight city, a monthly Paint Hour, a daily prompt. A deadline is how you manufacture a crowd when geography will not.
The fixed canvas is still here
Some things only work on a square: a shared palette everyone is stuck with, a border war over ground that cannot be expanded, an image that is finished at a known hour. That is what the yearly canvas at /rplace is for.
Looking for Reddit's own canvases instead? Every final r/place image, with the community atlas that labels it, is on the r/place map page.
Common questions
Is there an r/place on a world map?
Place Pixels and wplace both do it. The canvas is the Earth rather than a square, and each cell is a fixed patch of ground you can find by address.
How big is one pixel on the map?
Ten meters on a side, about the footprint of a small house. A city block takes a few hundred.
Is this the r/place atlas?
No. The atlas is a community project that catalogs what was drawn on Reddit's canvases and where. This is a canvas you can paint on.
How far can I zoom in?
Painting starts at zoom 15 and the grid is drawn up to zoom 20. Below zoom 10 a ten-meter square is smaller than a screen pixel, so there is nothing to show.
Can I paint anywhere on Earth?
Yes. Oceans, deserts and the middle of Antarctica included. Most people start on their own street.
