PLACE PIXELS
  • seven canvases
  • one table
  • checked against each source

Pixel canvas sites, compared.

Place Pixels, wplace, bplace, pxls.space, pixelplace.io, Our World of Pixels and r/place, on the four things that decide it: what you paint on, what a pixel costs, when it ends, and whether it is open at all. Four of the seven are blank boards. This one is your street.

  • Your pixel has an address, and a link opens the map on it
  • No account for your first 50 pixels
  • Open every day, and nothing resets
SiteWhat you paint onWhat a pixel costsWhen it ends
Place PixelsThe real world, in ten-meter squaresA wallet of 200 that refills 1 every 20 secondsNever. The map is permanent and work weathers rather than resets
wplaceThe real world, on an OpenStreetMap baseA pool of paint that refills 1 every 30 seconds, expanded by leveling or by spending dropletsNever, and finished work stays finished
Better PlaceThe real world, on an OpenStreetMap baseA pool of 200 that refills 1 every 15 seconds, raised by leveling or by spending chromasNever. The canvas is permanent
pxls.spaceOne fixed rectangular canvas, numbered and replaced every few monthsA cooldown that gets longer as more people come online, stacking up to 6 pixelsEvery canvas ends and is archived, then a new one opens
pixelplace.ioMany separate canvases, most of them made by players, plus a shared Pixel World War mapA 5 second cooldown on the free tier, shortened by premiumPer canvas, at whatever the owner decides
Our World of PixelsAn almost infinite blank canvas, plus custom worlds anyone can open at a URLNo cooldown. A rate limit caps drawing speedNo editions and no published reset schedule. Worlds persist at their URLs
r/placeOne square canvas, up to 3,000 by 2,000 in its last editionA cooldown of several minutes, varying by editionAfter a few days, with the palette cut to white

How to choose

One question settles most of it: do you want to paint a place that exists, or a blank rectangle? A blank rectangle asks you what to draw. A map already knows where your school is, which is why most people here start on a street they have walked down, and why the thing they paint is one nobody else could have.

Four of the seven are blank boards with no geography. Of the two other maps, wplace charges nothing extra to paint over your work an hour after you finish it and places one pixel at a time, and bplace publishes neither figure.

The other question is whether you want an ending. The yearly canvas here is a fixed square with a fixed palette, a start and an end, so a deadline is something you can opt into. The map underneath it never resets, which means the work is still there next year instead of archived as a screenshot.

What only a map does

Your pixel has an address

A link to your work opens the map at that spot, so showing someone what you painted is a URL rather than a screenshot with an arrow on it. On a blank canvas you have to decide what to draw. On a map you paint the building you live in, and you are the only person who knows what belongs there.

Start on your own street

  1. Find your street

Search a place or share your location, then zoom in to 15. The grid appears over the buildings, each square 10 meters across.

  2. Pick a color and paint

No cooldown between pixels. Stage as many as you like and commit them in one save, so a whole building goes down at once instead of over a week.

  3. Sign in only when you want to keep it

Your first 50 pixels go down before any of that, and they survive making an account. Google or Discord, no password.
