r/place 2025. Why there wasn't one.

A second year with no canvas and no announcement, and the year wplace put the same idea on a map of the whole world. The last canvas closed on July 25, 2023. A map of the real world is open meanwhile, with nothing that whites out at the end.

Why there was no r/place in 2025

A second year running with no canvas. By the end of 2025 it had been 2 years since r/place 2023 closed on July 25, 2023. That is still shorter than the 5-year wait between 2017 and 2022.

The idea did not wait for Reddit. In 2025 wplace put the same shared-canvas idea on a map of the whole world, with no end date.

Reddit again gave no reason and made no announcement. r/place has run in 3 of the 9 years from 2017 to 2025.

What that means

There is no 2025 canvas to look up: no final image, no atlas and no placement data. The most recent canvas is r/place 2023, and every final canvas is on the r/place map page, with the atlas that labels it.

When the last one ran

r/place 2023 ran July 20 to 25, 2023. The canvas was 1,000 by 1,000, expanded six times to 3,000 by 2,000, and the palette 8 colors, expanded to 32.

The palette dropped to grayscale for the last hours, then to white, and the canvas went blank.

Is r/place coming back?

What Reddit has said

Reddit has announced no r/place for 2026, and none ran in 2024 or 2025 either.

The one public hint since 2023 came from Snakeroom, who found the r/place code still in place on March 22, 2026. That is a datamining find, not a date. The answer for 2026 and 2027 is rechecked monthly, last on October 10, 2026.

Common questions

Was there an r/place in 2025?

No. No canvas opened in 2025, the second year running without one, and Reddit made no announcement.

Why was there no r/place in 2025?

Reddit gave no reason. r/place has never run on a schedule: it ran in 2017, 2022 and 2023, with a 5-year wait between 2017 and 2022.

How long has it been since the last r/place?

The last canvas closed on July 25, 2023, at the end of r/place 2023. Nothing has opened since.

Is there an r/place 2025 map or atlas?

No. With no canvas there was nothing to map. The community atlases cover 2017, 2022 and 2023.

Will r/place come back?

Reddit has announced no r/place for 2026, and none ran in 2024 or 2025 either.

What can I play instead of r/place?

Place Pixels is a shared map of the real world, open every day, with a yearly canvas in the r/place format: a 400 by 400 square and 32 colors. Your first 50 pixels go down before you make an account.
