The palette
Every color anyone had to work with, all 32 of them. The constraint is the reason the canvas looks the way it does.
What happened
Five years after the first one, Reddit reopened the canvas with ten times the audience. The board doubled twice while people were working on it, which is the detail that made 2022 different: every expansion released a continent of empty ground, and whoever was organized enough to move first took it.
That rewarded scale over patience. Large communities ran coordinated fills through Discord with bots handing out coordinates, streamers pointed six-figure audiences at single flags, and small groups survived mostly by being adjacent to a large one that tolerated them. The famous images from 2022 are all treaties: borders negotiated between groups who could each have erased the other.
26 million of the 160 million placements repainted a square the color it already was. That is what defending a finished piece looks like at that scale, and it is roughly a sixth of all the effort spent.
How it ended
Reddit cut the palette to white only, and the canvas was painted blank inside an hour.
The 2022 canvas is a picture now. It is archived, nothing on it can be repainted, and every account that painted it is looking at the same still image you are.

The community atlas draws the 2022 canvas and labels the art on it: The 2022 r/place Atlas. Every final canvas is on the r/place map page, with its size, its palette and its atlas.
