When to start watching
Two of the three editions opened on April 1, and the 2022 one was announced on March 28. Four days is the most notice Reddit has ever given, so there is no useful signal to look for before then.
The exception is 2023, which opened on July 20 with no April edition that year. Whatever rule Reddit is following, it is not the calendar.

What a gap this long means
Less than it looks. The gap between the first two editions was five years, and the second one was the largest thing Reddit has ever run. A quiet 2024, 2025 and 2026 rules out nothing about 2027.
What to paint until then
If it runs at all, the earliest useful signal is late March 2027. That is a long time to keep a tab open for a canvas that may not open.

Will there be an r/place in 2027?
Nothing has been announced, and Reddit does not announce these more than a few days ahead. The 2022 canvas was confirmed four days before it opened.
When would an r/place 2027 run?
April 1 if it follows 2017 and 2022. The 2023 edition ran in July, so the April pattern is not reliable.
