What happened
The third edition broke both patterns the first two had set. It ran in July rather than on April Fools, and it opened with eight colors instead of sixteen, then grew: six canvas expansions to 3,000 by 2,000, and a palette that reached 32.
It also ran into a Reddit that a lot of its users were angry at. Weeks earlier the API pricing change had closed most third-party Reddit apps and driven thousands of subreddits into blackout, and a good deal of the canvas was given over to saying so. Protest art competed for space with the usual flags and franchises.
Nothing has opened since. Three years on, this remains the most recent time anybody painted on Reddit's canvas.
How it ended
The palette dropped to grayscale for the last hours, then to white, and the canvas went blank.
The 2023 canvas is a picture now. It is archived, nothing on it can be repainted, and every account that painted it is looking at the same still image you are.

The community atlas draws the 2023 canvas and labels the art on it: The 2023 r/place Atlas. Every final canvas is on the r/place map page, with its size, its palette and its atlas.
Common questions
When was the last r/place?
July 20 to 25, 2023. Nothing has run since.
Why was r/place 2023 in July instead of April?
Reddit gave no reason. It is the only edition not tied to April Fools, and it ran weeks after the API pricing change that closed thousands of third-party apps.
How big did the 2023 canvas get?
It opened at 1,000 by 1,000 and expanded six times to 3,000 by 2,000, the largest canvas any edition has used.
Why did r/place 2023 start with only eight colors?
The palette opened at 8 and grew to 32 alongside the canvas expansions, so early work was made under a tighter constraint than any previous edition.
