r/place 2024. Why there wasn't one.

The first year without a canvas after two in a row. April 1 passed, and Reddit opened nothing and announced nothing. The last canvas closed on July 25, 2023. A map of the real world is open meanwhile, with nothing that whites out at the end.

  • A map that is open today, and every day
  • No account for your first 50 pixels
  • A yearly canvas here, with a start and an end

Why there was no r/place in 2024

2022 and 2023 ran in consecutive years, the only time r/place has, so 2024 was the year another one looked most likely. April 1 passed without a canvas. So did the rest of the year. Reddit gave no reason and made no announcement.

That is less strange than it looks. r/place has run in 3 of the 8 years from 2017 to 2024, and never on a schedule. Reddit has not published one, and the wait between the first two editions was 5 years.

What that means

There is no 2024 canvas to look up: no final image, no atlas and no placement data. The most recent canvas is r/place 2023, and every final canvas is on the r/place map page, with the atlas that labels it.

When the last one ran

r/place 2023 ran July 20 to 25, 2023. The canvas was 1,000 by 1,000, expanded six times to 3,000 by 2,000, and the palette 8 colors, expanded to 32.

The palette dropped to grayscale for the last hours, then to white, and the canvas went blank.

Is r/place coming back?

What Reddit has said

Reddit has announced no r/place for 2026, and none ran in 2024 or 2025 either.

The one public hint since 2023 came from Snakeroom, who found the r/place code still in place on March 22, 2026. That is a datamining find, not a date. The answer for 2026 and 2027 is rechecked monthly, last on October 10, 2026.
