- no cooldown on either
- different boards
- both free
Infinite blank plane, or the real world.
Our World of Pixels has run since 2016: an almost infinite canvas, drawn in real time, no cooldown. Place Pixels trades the infinity for geography. The canvas is the planet in ten-meter squares, so the first thing most people paint is the street they live on.
- 5,000 pixels in one save
- No account for your first 50 pixels
- Painting over fresh work costs more
| Place Pixels | Our World of Pixels | |
|---|---|---|
| The board | The real world, in ten-meter squares | An almost infinite blank canvas, plus custom worlds anyone can open at a URL |
| Cost of a pixel | A wallet of 200 that refills 1 every 20 seconds | No cooldown. A rate limit caps drawing speed |
| Pixels per save | Up to 5,000 pixels in one save | Drawn live, one pixel at a time |
| Before you sign up | 50 pixels before you make an account | Drawing without an account is allowed |
| Painting over someone | 3 pixels to paint over work under an hour old, 2 under a day, 1 after | Free, unless a moderator has protected the area |
| Your own canvas | No private canvases | Any new URL opens a new world |
| When it ends | Never. The map is permanent and work weathers rather than resets | No editions and no published reset schedule. Worlds persist at their URLs |
Where the two designs part
What is the canvas?
A map of the real world. Every square is ten meters of an actual place, so a finished piece sits on your street, your school, your city, and a link to it opens the map right there.
An almost infinite blank plane. Space is never scarce, so anything can go anywhere, and no spot means anything until somebody draws on it.
What protects a finished piece?
A price. Painting over a stranger's fresh work costs three times what painting empty ground does, decaying back to one as it ages. No moderator has to notice.
Moderators. They can protect areas of the canvas, and the protection outlines are visible in the client. Everything unprotected is free to overwrite.
A square untouched for 365 days starts to desaturate, reaching 20 percent of the way to gray after 3 years. It is visual only, landmarks never weather, and refreshing a whole piece is free.
What an overwrite costs here
| What is already there | Pixels |
|---|---|
| Empty ground | 1 |
| Your own pixel, at any age | 1 |
| Someone else's, under 1 hour old | 3 |
| Someone else's, under a day old | 2 |
| Someone else's, older than a day | 1 |
| A landmark | 5 |
A new account can overwrite at most 100 of other players' pixels a day until it is 48 hours old and has placed 500. Empty ground and your own work never count toward it.
Your own canvas
Our World of Pixels gives every visitor a fresh world for the price of typing a URL. Place Pixels has no private canvases: the event canvases and community murals here are shared surfaces with everyone else, so a blank board for your own group is something owop does and this does not.
Start on your own street
- Find your street
Search a place or share your location, then zoom in to 15. The grid appears over the buildings, each square 10 meters across.
- Pick a color and paint
No cooldown between pixels. Stage as many as you like and commit them in one save, so a whole building goes down at once instead of over a week.
- Sign in only when you want to keep it
Your first 50 pixels go down before any of that, and they survive making an account. Google or Discord, no password.
Where these numbers come from
Place Pixels figures are the values the game enforces today.
Everything else comes from each project's own site or wiki: wplace.live and its community guidelines for wplace, bplace.art and its in-app chroma store for Better Place, the pxls.space FAQ and wiki for pxls.space, pixelplace.io and the pixelplace wiki for pixelplace.io, ourworldofpixels.com and its community wikis for Our World of Pixels, Wikipedia and Reddit's own announcements for r/place.
Common questions
Is Place Pixels like Our World of Pixels?
Both are shared canvases where anyone can paint over anyone. The board is the difference: owop is an almost infinite blank plane, and Place Pixels is a map of the real world in ten-meter squares, so what you paint here has an address.
Does Our World of Pixels have a cooldown?
No cooldown; a rate limit caps how fast pixels go down. Place Pixels has no cooldown either. You spend from a wallet that refills over time, and one save can commit 5,000 pixels.
Can I make my own canvas?
On owop, yes: typing a new URL opens a new world. Place Pixels has one shared world map and separate event canvases, and no private canvases.
Do I need an account?
Neither site asks for one before you draw. Here your first 50 pixels go down before you sign in, and they survive making the account.
One shared map of the real world, cut into 10-meter squares. Find the street you live on, pick a color, and paint it.
